So here is a list dedicated to the young girls planning their futures. These are some things you can train for NOW and then have a little work-from-home income when you have small children:

photography
wedding hair
hair cuts
nails
catering
grant writing
editing
web design
web master
graphic design
tutoring (SAT, GED, elem, hs, and so on)
sewing--alterations
writing

Broken

At the beach this summer, Uncle Drew asked, "What is the most expensive thing Pierce has ever broken?" I honestly couldn't think of what he had broken. Guess God blessed me with the ability to block it out. But since then, I have been stuck on this question and so I had to make a list. So I share it, not to cast a bad light on Pierce, but to free it from flitting around in my brain and hopefully offer some amusement. I think we've been pretty lucky:

Broken:
his crib (kicked the end off)
his bed (jumped on it til it collapsed)
my necklace (got mad and yanked it)
kitchen tongs (still don't know how)
lamp (just heard a crash)
window (with his foot)
plastic pitcher (ran over with lightning mcqueen)
plate (didn't like what was on it)
drink holders in the car (they folded out and he tried to step on them)
handle off of a pot (threw it down)
buttons on the ottoman (jumped on the ottoman, buttons hit the ceiling)
GPS holder (found the evidence but can't get a straight answer)

Honorable mentions:
angrily launched a jug of milk out of the grocery cart, which of course busted
flung an unopened Pepsi can into the TV stand, which busted and spewed Pepsi on all four walls of the living room

Near misses:
treadmill--turned it off/on/off/on until it smoked and give itself a 10-min timeout
my laptop--dropped it but was unsuccessful at destroying it
my nice camera--dropped it but so far so good
found sandpaper, applied it to antique furniture.

The Love Lost

Since Creed's arrival, many people have asked me how Pierce has been adjusting. I proudly tell them how much Pierce loves his brother--he says the sweetest things like, "Can we keep him forever?" and "Hey Creedy baby!" He looks forward to his regular "Brudder time" and insists on kissing him, oh, a thousand times a day. We just can't peel him off of him. So that is the short-ish answer to how Pierce is adjusting.

A more complete answer, however, might include the fact that Pierce has taken to telling me how that he doesn't love me anymore. Or that he doesn't like me. The first time this type of weapon appeared in his arsenal was soon after Creed's birth and it hasn't lost favor with him yet. Yesterday as I was preparing supper in the kitchen, I heard a fervent, "Mama! Mama! Mama! Come 'ere!" coming from the sunroom. Sensing panic in his voice, I dashed away from the chicken stew to see what the problem was. As my eyes are scanning the sunroom for broken glass or blood, I hear him say, "I gotta tell you somethin'. I don't like you." Exhale. "That's ok. I still like you baby. I'm going to finish supper." I turn and walk away before he gets the pleasure of reloading. As I walk I imagine thumping his head or "accidentally" crushing a toy underfoot as I walk away. But I control myself. Similarly, today when he refused to comply with my request (can't even remember what it was) I confiscated his Woody doll. He runs in my bedroom behind me, looks me square in the eye and says, "I don't LOVE you." (He definitely wanted to punctuate the word "love" to drive the dagger deeper.) "I will always love you baby," I say as I turn to take Creed to the bathroom and run his bathwater.

I laid Creed down and began unbuttoning his little pajamas as I considered how much truth might be in what Pierce was saying. I want him to like me. I want him to love me. How could he not like me? I wonder. Didn't I just spend the last $1.50 I had left on my Starbucks card to get him a hot chocolate that very day? Hadn't I taken him to see the fish at the mall that very day? Hadn't I taken him to the park and pushed him in the swing for what seemed an hour THAT VERY DAY? That train of thought could continue on indefinitely if I let it. The more I think, the more frustrated it made me.

I am jolted from my wondering as I hear Pierce's little hands rummaging on my dresser. He appears moments later with a little back massager in his hands. He approaches me as I am bent over the tub scrubbing his brother. "Here mom. I'll rub your back," he says. "Thanks," I say, trying not to sound too emotional as I continue with the bath. As he offers a 10-second gesture of what I deem an apology, I decide that maybe, just maybe, the love isn't lost after all.

Third Day and Brandon Heath - Born on June 1st at 12:28 am, Creed weighed in at 7 lbs, 5 oz and was 20 1/4 inches long. Labor was 18 hours, but seemed more like and hour or hour and half, considering that that was the only pain that was memorable. The rest was uncomfortable but that last hour was unforgettable. Anyway, don't want to say too much for the sake of my pregnant friends. We chose the name Creed because we liked what it means (believe, or I believe) and also we like the song Creed by Rich Mullins. Bennett is a family name--my Granny's maiden name.

To back up a little bit, the way it all happened was quite amazing. On Sunday, my Mama and sister and my sister's two boys were flying in to Charlotte. I went to get them at about 5 or 6 pm Sunday night and then we came home and got settled. They were operating on 3-hour time difference so the boys stayed up a little later than normal before going to bed. Sometime after midnight, once everyone was peacefully sleeping, I made my bed on the couch (as usual) and drifted off to sleep. By 6 am I was so uncomfortable I had to get up and walk around. I was having a weird pain in my abdomen--thought it was a bladder infection! It took a few hours or so to realize that the pain was coming and going on somewhat regular intervals. My sister convinced me I might be in labor so we started timing them. Made a call to the doc and she said come on in to be checked out. She confirmed that I was in labor and that I was 4 cm at that point. She told me to go on to the hospital so off we went, where we spent the next 8 hours or so in irregular "contraptions" (our nurse misspoke and said contraptions instead of contractions one time and we all got a good laugh). Anyway, finally agreed to let the doc break the water around 11 or shortly thereafter. Then it was on like Donkey Kong. Fast forward to Nate cutting the cord, which was a little bit different than what he was expecting. He cord is thick and the scissors didn't seem up for the job. Enough about that. The hospital was GREAT about bringing Creed right up to my chest where I got to hold him as they wiped off his face and stuff. It was love at first sight!!! Couldn't believe that this is was the little guy who had been kicking me and hiccuping in my belly for months. Couldn't take my eyes off of his beautiful swollen face. :)

Our doc and nurses were incredible overall. They were extremely considerate of our wishes regarding Creed's birth. It all happened as we asked. He stayed in our room the entire time and we got lots of help with feeding and recovery. My nurse during labor, Caroline, was so sweet and thoughtful. I got so much personal attention--it was great. (It helped that I was the only woman giving birth at that hospital at that night.) I had no idea that the rush of adrenaline would keep me up most of the night. The excitement of seeing this tiny new baby was too much! By 3 am my attempts to rest were over and Nate made a trip to McDonalds. I was famished and this really hit the spot. Best chicken sandwich I have ever had.

Pierce was able to stay right at home with his cousins, his Lala, and his aunt Jenny. I thank God for that! We didn't have to call anyone or make any arrangements. They gave him incredible care and somehow managed to prepare meals for us and hang bows outside and even clean up! All with 3 kids to care for. Thank you so much!

Pierce came by to see his brother later in the day on Tuesday. He is a very proud brother and has worked up to holding him and supporting his head. He is definitely having difficulty adjusting but not once has he acted harshly towards his brother. He LOVES his brother. (at the moment)

So this is Creed's fifth day of life and while we treasure this special week, this special time, we are also excited about forming new routines and knowing what to expect (within reason of course) soon.

Ok pics will have to wait as Creed needs attention. Maybe later today.

Pierce and friends getting ice cream

Pierce and his friends at church walked to Brewster's ("Roosters") for ice cream last night (but not by themselves :). He, of course, didn't know what in the world was going on. He walked up to her and just stared and stared. Couldn't figure it out. He walked back over to me and whispered, "Is she talking to God?" He is so precious. I love his "God" quotes. As he was about to go to sleep one night, he called me in his room to tell me that his leg was itchy. I expressed my sympathy and he said, "I told God about it." And one last "God" quote. One night he and Nate were wrestling on the living room floor when Pierce stopped and put his head on Nate's chest, as if to listen to his heart. I said, "What do you hear?" He said, "God." (Nate and I look quizzically at each other.) I say, "What did he say?" He says, "He he talkin' 'bout the secrets of the valley." ????Say what???? All the parts look good and in working order. We are praising God for this news! We would accept whatever God gives us, knowing that He is good--whether the baby was healthy or with problems. But we praise Him for knitting together this little one so beautifully thus far! I hope to scan the pics soon, but I will say that the profile reminded me of Nate (Nate's mouth, anyway). The baby was awake but pretty still, so the the tech had to tap my stomach a bunch to encourage it to move. So crazy to see it moving around so much in there! I couldn't even feel the baby's movements but from the screen, it was clearly stretching out and turning over and moving its little arms. We are so ecstatic to have had a few moments to peek into its little world and see him or her. What a joy it is to get a preview of this little one! Can't wait to get Pierce's impressions of the pictures! (Last time he thought it looked like a shark eating a baby.)

Getting bigger

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PBtDgWa42GI/S1JougntmBI/AAAAAAAAAOg/UOaMZlu7AfA/s400/IMG_3103.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427515649174640658" />
Here, Pierce helps me read to "Cookie." Is popcorn on sale?"

Wish I could convey how funny it was in that moment.

A few Thanksgiving and Christmas pictures

Colorado, Oak City, and Salisbury 2009

Christmas 09

Relevant Blog Post

My friend Susan and I have known each other for three or four years now--back when she just had two kids and I had zero. Now, she has four and we are looking forward to number two in June! Neither of us knew when we met, though, that someday we would both have adopted children and be able to share in the joys and trials that come with that. I am always inspired by her mommy skills, and appreciate her insight. Recently, she sent me this link to a blog posting by someone I don't know, but upon reading it, I felt like I could have written those same words myself. The moment I have been waiting for for 3 years! Because he had such a late night last night (went to a football game with the youth), he ended up sleeping late and we nearly slept right through it! However, we made it there in a mad scramble before it started and Pierce was glad to see his buddies. He kept telling me he didn't want to play, that he just wanted to watch. I would say that is fine, but we kept on putting on shinguards, cleats, etc. He was resistant to say the least. His team, the Mountaineers, gathered on the field to start the game. Pierce lingered on the sideline, reluctantly. The game starts and there stands Pierce, on the sideline. A few times he decided to run straight from his comfortable position on the sideline into the action and kick the ball a time or two, then run back. He was he THE MOST disinterested kid on the whole field. It was a little funny and little frustrating. (We paid for that jersey, kiddo!) Truth be told, there was a point early in the game when something on the sideline caught Pierce's eye and he could no longer concentrate on kicking a silly ball. He just kept staring at this thing and asking for this thing and the idea of soccer slowly faded away. Click here to see what Pierce saw. Pierce eventually had enough of the soccer game, turned, and began running towards the car (since I was ignoring his requests to be taken home and/or to have a snack). Once I realized he was serious about running away, I ran after him and we snuck away to McDonald's.

Because I love Pierce....

I will place a link to his favorite YouTube video here.

I would also like to say that Pierce got Rick Rolled today.

Homecoming, Part II.

To celebrate Pierce's place in our family, I wanted to post some pics of his early days with us as well as some more current ones so it would be fun to compare them. Our church did Studio Go for VBS this week and each night was a different theme: Go Lead, Go Risk, Go Serve... and so on. The first night was Go Lead. During the opening ceremony, a little girl was brought up from the crowd to rearrange the scrambled letters to spell the night's theme (did I mention it was Go Lead?). So with the letters LDEAOG she spells, "Go Dale." It was classic. The best part was that it was a completely innocent mistake on her part. Perfection. :)

More Pierce-isms

Unrelated things Pierce says, in no particular order:

We ate dat resrank, and yesterday.
Look! That's right--just weighed.

Anyway, on a more interesting note, Pierce has apparently learned how to spell! Today, my Mama asked me as discretely as possible, "Su, do you want me to get you an S-P-R-I-T-E?" I said, "How about a P-E-P-S-I?" She said, "Sure! I'll bring it outside." Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Pierce and I went to sit on the front porch to wait for Mama. She came out with my drink in hand and Pierce insisted on taking a sip. He looked up at me and said, "Lala messed up. She said she was going to get you a Sprite." I was bumfuzzled. I tried to recall the whole conversation and neither Mama nor I can remember saying "Sprite." My son is a linguistical master. Honey Cate was born at 1:06 pm in Denver, CO to Natalie and Drew. After getting word this morning that Natalie was going into labor we knew we would find it hard to stay focused in church. But hard is relative, considering what Natalie had to do. I must say, knowing that we would be welcoming a new life into our family today made the sky bluer, the music more lovely, and the flowers smell sweeter. As I fumble for the right words to describe it all, I am left just wanting to praise God for the depth and breadth of his blessings. Little Honey Cate, I can't wait to get to know you, beautiful girl! You are much anticipated gift from the Lord!

We thank God for the delightful little ones that enrich our family life! Garrett, Caroline, baby Shane, Pierce, and now Honey Cate--you are beautiful reflections of God's love for us!

Mama always said...

When I was little, I loved to be picked up--even after I was too big. My Mama used to say, "They say if you pick up a cow every day of his life you can pick him up when he is grown." I always thought that was a curious thing to say and it made me picture my Mama holding a grown cow. Her point was that I was a cow. Actually, I think her point was that if she picked me up everyday of my life she could pick me up when I was grown. We haven't tested the truthiness of her wisdom. This is all relevant because I think a day is coming when I will not be picking Pierce up anymore. He is drinking and eating so much, it is a medical marvel. He is totally working the system, coercing us into buying him bags upon bags of Cheetos from Big Lots each day. (The doctor DID say to let him eat whatever he would for a while.) Supper last night consisted of a bag of Cheetos (of course), applesauce, chocolate ice cream, two blue gogurts, chocolate milk, lemonade, juice and moutain dew. That's right, I said Mountain Dew. It is confession hour. I gave my son the most sinful of all soft drinks. Deal with that information as you see fit. I was ready to do whatever was within my power to make his sad little throat feel happier. I think it worked, as was evidenced by his incredible energy level today and overall good cheer. Hope tomorrow is another step forward on the road to recovery!
<img width='1' height='1'
